This summer the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 tournament is front and centre of all sport with Milton Keynes playing a major part. Stadium MK is set to host four matches at the tournament, including an all important Semi-final on Wednesday 27th July.

The Women’s EUROs have seen record breaking attendances with continued growth of the Women’s game celebrated throughout the country, but in particular Milton Keynes.

MK Dons SET plan to inspire a generation through recreational football opportunities for all women and girls in Milton Keynes. The tournament has seen record breaking attendances, which hasn’t just inspired the next generation but the current one too.

As part of the legacy of the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022, MK Dons SET have played a pivotal role in developing opportunities for diverse groups of women to play football in the city. Using football as a tool to inspire positive change, the programmes aim to break down barriers and change perceptions, creating a legacy to show that football is for everyone regardless of gender or background.

Working with several partners, MK Dons SET are providing women the opportunity to play recreational football. Sessions focus on fun, friends and fitness throughout a variety of programmes for all women to get involved; whether you have never kicked a ball before, or you’d like to pick it up again.

Participant Story: Ashleigh

Prior to starting Touchline Mums, Ashleigh really struggled with any social situations due to anxiety and panic attacks which had previously put a stop to her playing football after having children. The only exercise she did was ‘chasing after her kids as she did not feel confident to participate in any structured exercise. Social events and new situations can usually trigger her anxiety.

How did football make a positive impact to Ashleigh?

Ashleigh came to the Touchline Mums taster session back in June 2021 and has not looked back since. After a couple of months, Ashleigh felt confident enough to join the over 30s team and play in competitive matches.

“Joining Touchline Mums has been massive for me as social events and new situations can trigger my anxiety. The group has really made me feel at ease and I’ve been able to fall back in love with the game again.

“My fitness levels improved each week and I’m enjoying some ‘me’ time. It’s making me think about picking up my boots properly again and getting back on the pitch competitively. I also now feel more confident trying new social situations.”
