‘I’m a full-time carer for my husband – these sessions have made the world of difference to our lives’

Two football fans who put their club rivalries to one side when tying the knot have opened up how the beautiful game has helped them navigate challenges off the pitch in retirement.

Peter Randall’s life changed forever when he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2023, prompting his wife Josie to become his full-time carer.

The Milton Keynes couple are divided in their loyalties on the pitch – supporting Arsenal and Chelsea respectively – but it is the backing of the Dons and its charitable trust which has underlined football’s ability to unite and change lives.

“Since Peter’s diagnosis, he’s been far more reluctant to get out of the house,” said Josie.

“It’s a common issue for people living with Alzheimer’s – and has been challenging for both of us to process.”

Launched in partnership with Milton Keynes Council’s Admiral Nurses specialist nurse service in September, MK Dons Community Trust operates weekly physical activity sessions for adults living with neurological conditions, brain injuries and dementia.

The sessions engage participants with multi-sport activities, and are free for carers to attend who can access MK Admiral Nurses’ team who offer guidance and practical support for caregiving.

Josie and Peter are regular attendees, and said it’s changed both of their lives for the better.

“I love my husband, and I know these sessions make a huge difference to him,” said Josie.

“The whole team at MK Dons Community Trust are so attentive and look after every person who turns up to a session, which can often be an achievement in itself.

“Physical activity resonates with Peter like nothing else, and these sessions have been essential to his physical and mental wellbeing. He can connect with likeminded people in an environment where he feels secure and comfortable, which as his husband and carer is everything I can ask for.

“We’re determined to grow the group as there is no doubt in my mind that more people in Milton Keynes can benefit from this delivery. It worked for us, and can for hundreds more too.”

MK Dons Community Trust’s Adult Physical Activity Sessions are held every Wednesday at Tattenhoe Sports Pavilion from 1pm for an hour.

Sessions are priced £6.50 per adult – carers attend for free – with all funds committed to MK Dons Community Trust’s work to improve lives in the city by harnessing the power of football and the club badge.

The Admiral Nurses team attend on the second Wednesday of the month, and an onsite café is open each week too.

To book onto any of MK Dons Community Trust’s Adult Physical Activity sessions, participants or their carers can email information@mkdonsset.com or call 01908 622888.
